When I was a child I was always curious about what I didn't know. It was obvious to me that I could never know everything. But, even worse, perhaps there were some areas of knowledge I didn't even know existed, things I would therefore never even know I knew nothing about.

So what is 'Dark Knowledge'? Here is a definition. Dark Knowledge refers to that knowledge which lies entirely outside the realm of human experience. It is any knowledge of which we do not know that we do not know, or a body of knowledge about which we are completely unaware even of our ignorance.

Quite frightening!

So, let's see what we can find out. The example on the right gives an idea of this.

I'll write some more about Dark Knowledge later, but for now I'm going to use this site for reviews. May be some Dark Knowledge in these!

A black and white picture of the moon

Rather a nice photo of the moon. The moon, of course, is well-known for its far side. The moon orbits the earth in such a way (synchronous rotation) that whenever we look at the moon we see the same side and the far side is always hidden from us. Sometimes the far side is confused with the dark side, but they are not the same. The dark side is the hemisphere that is not being illuminated by the Sun at a given time. Pink Floyd may have some responsibility for confusing the two!

But from our point of view, the far side of the moon does not represent an example of dark knowledge. Although it wasn't photographed until 1959 we knew it existed. In other words, we weren't ignorant of our lack of knowledge of it!
